About This Place

Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs in Martinsville, VA, is a standout destination for barbecue lovers seeking an authentic Southern dining experience that tantalizes every sense. From the moment you step inside their welcoming and spacious venue at 1014 Liberty Street, you’re greeted with the rich aroma of slow-smoked meats infused with deep, smoky goodness—a true testament to their craft.

The menu reads like a celebration of classic barbecue staples and Southern comfort food, offering a variety of delectable options that keep patrons coming back. Their ribs are a must-try, featuring tender, juicy meat that effortlessly falls off the bone, especially when paired with their “competition sauce.” This sauce is a complex flavor explosion that's adored by both seasoned BBQ fans and newcomers alike. For those who appreciate a hearty, robust meal, the brisket stands out with a perfectly smoky crust and melt-in-your-mouth texture, earning rave reviews from locals like Harrison C., who called it one of the best briskets he's had in a long time.

But the flavor doesn’t stop at the meats. The Southern-style sides here hold their own spotlight, from creamy macaroni and cheese to their famously "best-ever" collard greens, praised by Daniel Griffin for their rich, authentic taste. The hushpuppies are golden and crisp on the outside while tender inside—often described as downright amazing and the perfect complement to any meal. Couple that with the sweet and satisfying homemade banana pudding, served warm, and you have a well-rounded meal that hits every favorite spot.

Beyond the food, Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs offers a casual yet vibrant atmosphere that welcomes families, couples, and solo diners alike. It’s a place where the staff’s warmth and friendly service make you feel truly at home, whether you’re settling in for a leisurely lunch or grabbing a quick takeout. Charles Atkins underscores the attentive, clean, and efficient ambiance, highlighting the friendly staff who balance the busy crowd with grace.

For those who appreciate a full Southern barbecue experience, the menu is thoughtfully diverse—featuring everything from pulled pork sandwiches and chicken tender platters to BBQ nachos, peach cobbler, and classic cornbread. The drink selection, anchored by their sweet tea, offers the perfect Southern refreshment, though sweet tea aficionados from the heart of the South might find it a touch less sweet than expected, as noted by Philip Parrish. Still, the fact that this minor detail hasn’t dampened the overall enjoyment speaks volumes about the quality here.

Whether you're a Martinsville local or just passing through, Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs delivers a delicious blend of hearty barbecue, comforting sides, and a warm, down-home atmosphere. It’s the sort of place that invites you to savor each bite, share good times with great company, and keep coming back for more.

Besides the delicious pork BBQ, the collard greens are the best I have ever eaten. This visit I tried the barbecue ribs along with the chopped pork. The meat on the ribs was perfect and tender and the bones came out clean. They have a new sauce on the table called competition sauce. It is very complex and flavor and is absolutely delicious on those ribs. I can go on and on about the smoke and the flavors and the good service. What you need to do is find this place as soon as possible. I even got a quart of collard greens to go. I will definitely return to this place when I am in Martinsville.

Pretty good place to eat. Brisket was good. Hushpuppies are amazing, as was the banana pudding. (served warm) About the only issue I personally had was that the sweet tea isn't all that great. I'm very much from the south though and like me tea pretty sweet. If you're not from thr area, this mau not be an issue for you. Otherwise, nice place. Friendly staff, and food was served quickly, in spite of it being fairly busy. They've got their system down. Good atmosphere. About what you'd expect from a southern BBQ restaurant. Overall, good experience.

Checkered Pig BBQ & Ribs has been a family favorite for years—I've enjoyed many lunches here with loved ones, and it never disappoints. Tucked just slightly off the beaten path, it’s the kind of place you’re glad you found and even happier to return to. There’s plenty of seating, which makes it easy to settle in even during the lunch rush. And speaking of busy—yes, they often have a good crowd, but the kitchen runs like clockwork. Food comes out hot, fresh, and fast, every single time. My go-tos? The Chop Plate is always satisfying, the Chop BBQ Sandwich hits the spot, and the Brisket Tacos are a smoky little surprise. Even the hotdog is worth mentioning—simple, tasty, and served with care. No matter what we order, the quality is consistent and the flavor is one we know we can trust. The service is friendly and welcoming, the prices are great, and the restaurant itself is clean and styled just like a classic BBQ joint should be—no fuss, just good food and good vibes. If you're looking for a place that feels like home and serves up barbecue with heart, Checkered Pig is it.

This was some of the best beef brisket I have had in a very long time! I went for lunch a couple weeks ago, and it was absolutely packed, though this stuff was working so hard and so fast, even with no empty tables, there wasn’t a wait. Sides were all delicious, especially the mac & cheese. Do not get me started on their special sauce, I could drink a whole glass of it! If you are in Martinsville, check it out.

I got take out from the Checkered Pig. We ordered the 1/2 Champion. This let us try their diferent meats. Ribs, Brisket, pulled pork, chicken breast, and hushpuppies and three sides. The meats were great and so was the hushpuppies. I would have given it 5 stars, but they forgot my green beans. The restaraunt was spacious and well kept. The service was very friendly. I would highly recommend this place.

Checkered Pig is a great local BBQ place. They have brisket, pork and chicken. Sides are very good as well. We always get way more food than we can ever eat in a si gle meal.
